ABOUT US

Researchers at Western Sydney University are starting a new project to learn more about native Blue-Banded Bees with a view to optimising their role as pollinators of several crop and native plant species.

We are also setting up a nursery to better understand life-cycles, nesting biology, diets and health.

This project will develop management techniques to enhance the potential use of blue-banded bees in horticultural settings by addressing the following:

1. Overcome limitations in the use of Blue Banded Bees by:

  • Enhancing bee navigation in large greenhouses

  • Identifying and developing pollen and nectar sources

  • Understanding crop pests & disease on bee health

2. Review common diseases of blue-banded bees

3. Develop procedures for mass rearing
